Volume II - ARCHIVED

THIS EPISODE HAS BEEN ARCHIVED

Here’s Volume II for you all - click on the scary dude to download. A nice mix, no theme, no featured artist, just good shit. The items listed as "oop" are out of print, but if you like them you can probably find copies out on the internet if you search hard enough. I have to think that someone has re-released the S.O.B. LP along with the rest of their stuff (the split with Napalm Death is excellent).

Some liner notes

The first song is by BL'AST! who were an excellent mix of Black Flag, C.O.C. and SSD. I remember seeing ads for the LP "It's In My Blood" in Thrasher magazine and, if I recall correctly, it was being sold as "the heaviest record ever". When I bought it I have to admit I was let down because to my 16 year old ears it was nowhere near as heavy as Celtic Frost or Saint Vitus. Over the years of course I came to appreciate that "heavy" has a lot of meanings.

Exciter was a Canadian band who predated the whole Bay Area thrash explosion. Along with Raven, Anvil, Angel Witch and some others, they remain really unappreciated and their influence and impact was pretty lasting. Also, like fellow Canadians Triumph, their drummer was the singer.

Speaking of drummers, TT Quick's drummer (Glen Evans) went on to play in Nuclear Assault. Sweet Savage's guitarist was Vivian Campbell, later to be Dio's first guitarist. Born Without a Face released two 7"s, both of which were well ahead of their time in terms of blending together metal and hardcore. My friend Drew turned me onto these guys way back in 1988 or so. Thanks buddy. GISM were a Japanese hardcore band that people loved but I always found a little generic. This particular song shreds though, if only because it's so weird. I know very little about Skeletonwitch other than they have a ridiculously metal name. Gehenna here is the Scandinavian black metal band, not the metalcore band from San Diego whose singer, Mike Cheese, used to punch people out while playing.

Upcoming themes I'm working on: an all NWOBHM post, a tribute to Iron Maiden, and a couple surprises.

Volume I - ARCHIVED

THIS EPISODE HAS BEEN ARCHIVED

Volume I is heavy on 80's shit which is intentional. I found a record store in my neighborhood that I had not seen before. They're currently selling a lot of old metal on vinyl - stuff that I thought was way out of print and that no one cared about (let alone remembered). For example - all of the Possessed LPs. And these were not used originals, they were represses on 180 gram vinyl with gatefold covers. Made me feel really old. So, I thought I'd roll with it and kick things off old school.
