Volume V - ARCHIVED

First and foremost - Motorhead. Four songs here, each illustrating one of the things that I have always loved about Motorhead: they're at their best when they play fast in the key of E and find someway to isolate Lemmy's bass, even if just for a brief break. These are also, with the exception of Back At The Funny Farm, relatively new Motorhead tunes illustrating how fucking good Motorhead remains. I also threw in a Neaderthal song from their flexi disk on Slap-a-Ham records. Neaderthal, for those unaware, was members of Infest and PHC and are generally created with inventing the whole "powerviolence" thing that blew up in the 90's HC scene (and was a welcome alternative to the floppy, watery, pseudo metal that many other former hardcore were playing). The At The Gates song is deliberately placed before the King Diamond song. Blatant riff theft or unconscious influence? You be the judge - both are great songs regardless. The Anathema song is a Venom cover - duh. The Tombs song is punishing, plain and simple. The unholy racket these guys create is fantastic and this particular song is indicative of the thought and craft that goes into writing their stuff. Under the crushing volume and blast beats is some really smart songwriting. Void was one of the first hardcore bands I ever heard and to this day, very little rivals the intensity and raw violence their special brand of noise delivered. Literally a classic. Finally, I start the show with a song from theLegacy demo, 1985. Legacy's lead singer would go on to join Exodus and he'd be replaced by a hulking dude with two first names. They'd also change their name to Testament. I first heard this on a college radio show in Memphis, TN in, I suppose in either 1985 or 1986, back when the Bay Area Thrash scene was really coming together with bands like Death Angel, Blind Illusion, Possessed, etc. It wouldn't last long and would soon be replaced by Florida and Sweden, but it was a glorious 2 or 3 years for a while. This song brings back fond memories of discovering new sounds and bands - exactly what I hope to do with this podcast which is why it kicks things off.

Trouble are awesome. When they first showed up in the early 80's they were written off as being "too late" with their slow, Sabbathy tunage. As it turns out, they were actually too soon as they, along with Saint Vitus and Witchfinder General would go on to influence the modern "doom" genre. This is one of their more "up-tempo" numbers. It's got some pep in it's step. Discharge. Seriously, if you don't know Discharge you need to get familiar with them - at least everything up to 1984. Bastardator remind me of early Venom and Voivod. Sloppy and thick with an excellent bass tone. I had never heard of Russian Circles until a few weeks ago when I saw that my old pal Sam had them "liked" on Facebook. So I checked them out and am so happy I did. Holy shit. Warhammer are a blatant Hellhammer ripoff / dedication. Down to the shitty guitar solos and Swiss accent. How can you not love that? Speaking of which . . . I threw Black Breath on here after Entombed, Carnage and Dismember because they sound dead on like early 90's Swedish death metal. I hope it's more a cheeky "dedication" and less "aping". Regardless, I really dig those dudes. Finally we have Angel Witch, the unsung progenitor of thrash and speedmetal. The "big 4" owe a LOT to Angel Witch who, sadly, went absolutely nowhere other than into infamy....

Lastly, and I hate to write this sentence out...but hey, if you dig the blog why not "like" it on Facebook?
